What is Shepherd’s Gate?

Shepherd’s Gate is a Christ-centered restoration ministry operating under Repairer of the Breach Ministries (NPO 322-654). While it includes a structured nine-month residential rehabilitation program, its vision extends beyond recovery alone. Shepherd’s Gate exists as a holistic restoration hub focused on spiritual renewal, personal growth, disciplined living, skills development, and community transformation. Our aim is not merely sobriety, but full-life restoration — rebuilding identity, character, faith, purpose, and long-term sustainability.

Through structured programs, discipleship, work-based learning, and future-facing initiatives such as skills training, apprenticeship development, and community engagement platforms, Shepherd’s Gate seeks to restore individuals in a way that prepares them for meaningful reintegration into family life, church community, and the workplace. It is a place where faith, responsibility, and practical opportunity intersect to create lasting impact.

What makes Shepherd’s Gate different from other rehabilitation centres?

Shepherd’s Gate differs from many rehabilitation centres in that we focus on long-term transformation within a broader restoration vision, not just short-term recovery. Our structured nine-month residential program provides the time necessary for deep behavioural change, spiritual anchoring, character development, and the formation of disciplined habits. We integrate Biblical discipleship, structured recovery principles, accountability systems, work responsibility, and community living — addressing the whole person rather than simply managing addiction symptoms.

Beyond rehabilitation, our long-term vision includes skills development, apprenticeship-based learning, workplace readiness, and community engagement initiatives that bridge the gap between recovery and sustainable reintegration. Shepherd’s Gate is not merely a detox or treatment facility, but a restoration hub designed to rebuild identity, strengthen families, foster faith, and equip individuals for meaningful participation in church, society, and the workplace.

Who owns / oversees Shepherd’s Gate?

Shepherd’s Gate operates under Repairer of the Breach Ministries (NPO 322-654), which serves as its governing and oversight body. The ministry provides strategic direction, governance accountability, and financial oversight to ensure that Shepherd’s Gate functions in alignment with its vision, values, and legal obligations.

As a registered Non-Profit Organisation, Repairer of the Breach Ministries is governed by its appointed board, ensuring proper accountability, responsible stewardship of funds, and transparent leadership. Shepherd’s Gate functions as a ministry initiative under this structure, guided by its leadership team within the framework of the NPO’s governance.

Is Shepherd’s Gate registered?

Shepherd’s Gate is currently operating as a ministry under Repairer of the Breach Ministries (NPO 322-654), and we are in the process of completing the necessary registration processes specific to the rehabilitation facility itself.

Although the centre is ministry-based, we maintain responsible oversight and professional support structures. We have a qualified Social Worker on staff and a registered nurse who conducts regular medical check-ups and remains available when needed. This ensures that students receive appropriate professional care within a structured and accountable environment while the formal registration process is being finalised.

Program & Admission (For Families)

How long is the program?

The core residential program at Shepherd’s Gate is nine months in length. This allows sufficient time for meaningful behavioural change, spiritual growth, personal development, and the establishment of healthy routines.

After completing the residential phase, students may enter an optional nine-month aftercare program for continued accountability and support. For those who pursue skills development and apprenticeship pathways, the journey may extend up to an additional 18 months, focusing on applied learning, workplace readiness, and long-term social integration.

Why is the program nine months and not shorter?

Our program is structured as a nine-month process because lasting restoration requires more than short-term intervention. Addiction affects a person spiritually, emotionally, physically, and behaviourally — and sustainable change takes time. Research and practical experience consistently show that deeper behavioural transformation, relapse prevention, emotional healing, and the establishment of new habits require an extended period of structured support and accountability. A longer program allows students to move beyond initial detox and crisis stabilisation into meaningful character development, personal responsibility, and consistent lifestyle change.

At Shepherd’s Gate Restoration Centre, we focus not only on sobriety, but on rebuilding identity, discipline, spiritual foundation, work ethic, and relational health. The nine-month journey allows sufficient time to complete the full recovery process, including structured discipleship, skills development, service responsibilities, and reintegration preparation. Our goal is not simply that students leave substance-free, but that they leave equipped, anchored, and prepared for long-term restoration in their families, churches, and communities.

What addictions do you treat?

We work with all forms of addiction, including substance-related addictions (such as alcohol, drugs, and prescription medication) as well as behavioural addictions (such as gambling, pornography, gaming, and other compulsive behaviours). While the substances or behaviours may differ, addiction affects the same reward and decision-making systems of the brain and produces similar patterns of dependency, loss of control, destructive habits, and relational breakdown.

Because addiction follows similar neurological and behavioural pathways, the core principles of recovery are fundamentally the same: accountability, structured routine, emotional healing, identity restoration, spiritual anchoring, and the development of new habits. Our program addresses the root drivers of addiction rather than focusing only on the specific substance or behaviour. This allows us to effectively treat all addictions through one integrated restoration process that brings lasting change rather than temporary symptom management.

What is a typical day like at Shepherd’s Gate?

A typical day at Shepherd’s Gate is structured, purposeful, and balanced between spiritual growth, practical responsibility, recovery work, and physical activity. Each day begins with prayer, devotions, and praise and worship, grounding students spiritually before moving into house responsibilities, work therapy, and counselling sessions. Students participate in meaningful work stations such as maintenance, cleaning, laundry, administration, and animal care, helping to build discipline, teamwork, and work ethic. The recovery process includes structured step work, accountability meetings, and individual or group counselling, alongside regular clinic check-ins. Afternoons and evenings include physical activity such as sports or hiking, followed by supper, structured evening sessions like Bible school, cell groups, guest speakers, or worship, and time for fellowship and reflection. The day closes with accountability check-ins and quiet time, ensuring that each student ends the day with personal reflection, responsibility, and spiritual focus.

Is this a medical detox facility?

No, Shepherd’s Gate is not a medical detox facility. However, we have a strong working relationship with the psychological department at Vredenburg Provincial Hospital, who have consistently been willing to assist with medical detoxification when necessary. Where a medical detox is required, it is handled through the appropriate medical channels before the individual continues their recovery journey with us.

What happens if someone relapses during the program?

If a relapse occurs, it is addressed with restorative grace, but also with firm accountability. Our approach is not driven by condemnation, but by responsibility and protection of the recovery environment. We have structured systems in place, including regular and random drug testing, strong supervision, and daily accountability processes, which make relapse incidents extremely rare. Students understand that substance use will be detected and addressed immediately.

At a minimum, a relapse will result in the student restarting the program to ensure that the necessary foundation is properly rebuilt. Repeated or deliberate violations may result in dismissal from the program in order to protect the integrity and safety of the community. Our goal is always restoration — but lasting recovery requires honesty, responsibility, and commitment from each individual.

Are residents allowed to make contact with family?

Yes, residents at Shepherd’s Gate are allowed contact with their families (contact only after first month) — but it is structured and intentional, not casual or unrestricted. The goal is to protect the recovery process while still fostering reconciliation.

What should a new student bring?

See the document named “SGRC - Essentials Packing Checklist” in the downloadable document section.

Can someone be forced to attend?

No. Shepherd’s Gate is a voluntary program, and students must make the personal decision to pursue change. Lasting recovery requires willingness, honesty, and active participation. While family support is valuable and often necessary, true transformation cannot be forced from the outside — it must begin with the individual’s own commitment to leave their old lifestyle behind and fully engage in the restoration process.

We strongly discourage admission purely due to pressure from family, friends, or external circumstances. Without personal buy-in, recovery becomes superficial and short-lived. Our experience shows that meaningful, sustainable change happens when a person chooses restoration for themselves and is prepared to do the work required for lasting freedom.

Spiritual Approach

Spiritual Approach

Shepherd’s Gate Restoration Centre is built on a Christ-centered foundation. We believe that addiction is not only a behavioural or emotional struggle, but also a spiritual battle that affects identity, purpose, and relationship with God. Our program integrates Biblical teaching, prayer, discipleship, and the principles of the 12-step recovery model (as implemented through Celebrate Recovery) to address the heart of the issue, not just the symptoms. Students participate in daily devotions, praise and worship, Bible study, and guided spiritual mentorship as part of their restoration journey.

Our spiritual approach is not about religion, but about relationship — restoring a person’s identity as created with purpose and value. Through accountability, grace, truth, and structured discipleship, we aim to anchor each student spiritually while they rebuild discipline, character, and responsibility in practical areas of life. We believe that sustainable recovery is strongest when spiritual transformation accompanies emotional healing and behavioural change, creating a solid foundation for long-term freedom.

What role does faith play in recovery?

Faith plays a central role in recovery at Shepherd’s Gate because it addresses the deeper issues of identity, hope, forgiveness, and purpose that often lie beneath addiction. While structure, counselling, and accountability are essential, we believe lasting freedom is strengthened when a person reconnects with God and builds their life on a renewed spiritual foundation. Faith provides the motivation to persevere, the humility to change, the courage to take responsibility, and the assurance that restoration is possible. It shifts recovery from merely stopping destructive behaviour to becoming the person God created them to be.

Do residents attend church?

Yes. We hold weekly church services on site, led by our resident pastor, and are regularly joined by visiting pastors who bring different preaching styles and perspectives. While Shepherd’s Gate identifies as Protestant Evangelical, we welcome students from various denominational backgrounds. Some of our teachers and guest speakers come from Reformed and other Christian traditions, creating a broad but Biblically grounded teaching environment.

In addition to our on-site services, we regularly participate in outreach visits to other churches and ministries, particularly on Sundays. These outreaches form part of our evangelistic focus, where students who have progressed well in the program share their testimonies. These testimonies often have a powerful impact, especially among young people, and serve as both encouragement to others and a confidence-building step in the student’s own restoration journey.

Family Restoration

Do you work with families during the program?

Yes, we engage with families during the program with the primary goal of promoting healthy communication and reconciliation. While we encourage supportive involvement and refer families to appropriate support groups, we do not offer on-site family counselling. We work closely with an independent private psychologist who is familiar with our program, and families who require professional counselling are welcome to contact her directly at their own cost. This allows us to focus on the student’s rehabilitation while ensuring families have access to appropriate external support.

What is family strengthening?

Family strengthening is the process of rebuilding trust, improving communication, and restoring healthy roles within the family system after addiction has caused strain or breakdown. Addiction often damages relationships through dishonesty, conflict, and emotional distance, so restoration must include repairing these foundations. Family strengthening focuses on accountability, forgiveness, clear boundaries, and re-establishing mutual respect in a healthy and sustainable way.

At Shepherd’s Gate, we promote family strengthening by encouraging responsible communication between students and their families, guiding reconciliation conversations where appropriate, and equipping students to take ownership of past behaviour. We also direct families to external support groups and professional counselling where needed. Our aim is not just individual recovery, but the restoration of family relationships built on truth, structure, and renewed trust.

Is there aftercare support for families?

We do not offer structured aftercare support specifically for families. However, we strongly encourage families to remain engaged in their own support journey and we direct them to appropriate support groups where they can receive ongoing guidance and encouragement. We believe that continued support for families plays an important role in maintaining healthy boundaries and contributing to the long-term success of the student’s recovery.

Donor & Investor FAQs

How is Shepherd’s Gate funded?

Shepherd’s Gate is primarily funded through the monthly program fees paid by students, which cover accommodation, meals, structured activities, and the daily operational costs of the centre. These fees enable us to maintain a safe, structured, and sustainable recovery environment.

We are also grateful for the support of sponsors and donors who contribute financially on a monthly basis. Their generosity assists us in strengthening the program, supporting students in need, and continuing the broader restoration work of the ministry.

Can I sponsor a student? What does it cost?

Yes, you can sponsor a student. The monthly cost is R5,000, which covers the full program, as well as accommodation and meals. Sponsorship plays a vital role in making restoration possible for individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford treatment, and directly contributes to giving someone the opportunity for lasting change.

Are donations tax deductible?

Repairer of the Breach Ministries (NPO 322-654) is a registered Non-Profit Organisation. We are currently in the process of being issued an Article 18A tax exemption certificate. Once this has been approved, qualifying donations will be tax-deductible and an official Section 18A receipt will be issued to donors accordingly. Until then, donations are greatly appreciated but are not yet tax-deductible.

How do you measure impact?

We measure impact through both observable life change and structured accountability markers throughout the program. This includes progress in sobriety, completion of the full nine-month program, engagement in step work and discipleship, behavioural change, work ethic development, restored family relationships, and successful reintegration into community, employment, or further training. Regular reviews, drug testing, counselling feedback, and staff assessments also form part of our internal monitoring process.

Beyond measurable milestones, we also evaluate impact through long-term outcomes — sustained sobriety, active church involvement, stable employment, and ongoing accountability after graduation. Testimonies, restored relationships, and continued contact with former students provide practical evidence that transformation is not temporary, but lasting.

Can I visit the farm before donating?

Yes, absolutely. We welcome prospective donors and supporters to visit the farm and see the work firsthand. We believe in transparency and are always glad to show people around, explain our program in detail, and share the vision of Shepherd’s Gate in person. Seeing the environment, meeting the team, and understanding the daily structure often gives a much clearer picture of the impact your support can make.

How are funds allocated across portfolios?

Repairer of the Breach Ministries (trading as Shepherd’s Gate Restoration Centre) serves as the primary governing body under which various portfolios operate. Each portfolio may have its own NPC and board oversight, but remains aligned under the broader vision and governance structure of the ministry. Donations may be given either to the main body for strategic allocation or directly to a specific portfolio if the donor wishes to designate their contribution.

Funds are allocated based on sustainability needs, program impact, and responsible governance oversight. Core operational requirements are prioritised to ensure the stability of the rehabilitation environment, while designated donations are applied strictly according to donor intent. All allocations are managed with accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability in mind to ensure that every contribution supports meaningful and measurable restoration work.

Volunteers & Partnerships

Can I volunteer? In what capacity?

Yes, we welcome volunteers who align with our vision and values. Many of our teachers, guest speakers, and preachers serve on a voluntary basis and play an important role in the spiritual and personal development of our students.

All volunteers are carefully vetted and approved to ensure they uphold the standards, doctrine, and structure of Shepherd’s Gate. Opportunities to serve may include teaching, mentoring, skills training, practical assistance, or supporting events and outreach initiatives, depending on current needs and suitability.

Can churches partner with Shepherd’s Gate?

Yes, we actively partner with multiple churches and value strong relationships within the local and broader Christian community. Many churches regularly visit Shepherd’s Gate to minister, teach, or support our students, and we in turn visit partner churches for fellowship, outreach, and testimony-sharing.

These partnerships strengthen both the students and the churches involved. They create opportunities for accountability, discipleship, and reintegration, while also allowing students to share their testimonies and encourage others. We welcome churches that align with our Biblical foundation and restoration vision to connect with us for meaningful partnership.

Do you offer internships?

Not at this stage.

Practical & Safety Questions

Where are you located?

Shepherd’s Gate Restoration Centre is located 7 km off the R399, just outside the town of Vredenburg on the West Coast of South Africa. Our rural farm setting provides a peaceful, structured environment conducive to reflection, restoration, and focused recovery away from previous destructive influences.

Is the facility secure?

Shepherd’s Gate is located in a quiet rural area outside Vredenburg, with very low levels of violent crime. While we do not operate with on-site security guards, our location away from town, controlled access to the property, and structured daily supervision create a safe and stable environment.

In addition, the presence of responsible adult men within a structured program, combined with clear house rules and oversight, makes the facility an unattractive target for criminal activity. Our rural setting provides both privacy and safety, allowing students to focus on their recovery in a secure and peaceful environment.

What happens in emergencies?

In the event of an emergency, the response depends on the nature and severity of the situation. Minor injuries or medical concerns are handled on-site by staff and senior students who are first-aid trained. For more serious medical emergencies, individuals are transported to Vredenburg Provincial Hospital, located approximately 7 km from the farm, where full medical services are available.

In cases involving psychological distress or drug-related symptoms such as hallucinations, we work closely with the hospital’s psychological department to ensure appropriate professional care. Our priority in any emergency is to respond quickly, responsibly, and in partnership with qualified medical professionals to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the program.

Do you provide medical care?

Shepherd’s Gate is not a medical facility, but we do provide basic medical oversight. A qualified nurse visits the centre once a week to conduct routine medical check-ups and assess students’ health needs. Where necessary, students are referred to the local government clinic or Vredenburg Provincial Hospital for further medical attention.

This approach ensures that students receive appropriate medical support while we remain focused on structured rehabilitation and long-term restoration.

Vision & Future Growth

What is the long-term vision for Shepherd’s Gate?

The long-term vision for Shepherd’s Gate is to become a holistic restoration hub that goes beyond rehabilitation into full-life transformation. Our aim is to restore individuals spiritually, emotionally, socially, and vocationally — equipping them not only to overcome addiction, but to build sustainable, purpose-driven lives. This includes structured personal growth, character development, career guidance, and practical skills training that prepares students for meaningful employment and responsible citizenship.

Over time, we envision expanding into apprenticeship-based applied learning, workplace readiness programs, and social integration initiatives that bridge the gap between recovery and real-world stability. Through initiatives such as a coffee shop and community centre, outreach partnerships, and skills development platforms, Shepherd’s Gate will function not only as a restoration centre, but as a place where faith, work, community, and purpose intersect — creating lasting impact for individuals, families, and the broader society.

How can I become a long-term partner?

Becoming a long-term partner with Shepherd’s Gate means joining us consistently in the work of restoration. This can take several forms, including monthly financial support, sponsoring a student, contributing to a specific portfolio or development project, or partnering as a church or business. Consistent partnership enables us to plan responsibly, maintain stability, and expand our impact over time.

Long-term partners may also support us through prayer, volunteering skills or services, offering employment opportunities to graduates, or collaborating in outreach initiatives. We believe meaningful partnership is built on shared vision, transparency, and ongoing relationship — and we welcome individuals, churches, and organisations who want to invest in lasting transformation.
